“Les chrétiens ne peuvent pas promouvoir la guerre”: le pape tacle Donald Trump
Pope Leo XIV asserted on Wednesday that Christians could not consider themselves as such if they were for “war”, in a thinly veiled reference to the administration of US President Donald Trump.
“We cannot believe in Jesus and promote war,” he declared in his homily delivered at the Sagrada Família Basilica in Barcelona. “We cannot believe in Jesus and abandon those who suffer, those who weep, those who flee misery,” he continued before thousands of worshippers, including King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife, Queen Letizia, seemingly alluding to the issue of migration.
At the end of May, Leo XIV deemed obsolete the concept of “just war,” championed notably by the Trump administration in the context of the war against Iran, initiated by the United States and Israel. He judged that this “theory” was “too often invoked to justify any war, subject to the right to self-defense in its strictest sense.”
The American president had described the pope as “weak” on crime and “incompetent” in foreign policy, to which Leo XIV had replied that he had a “moral duty” to speak out against war.
The first American pope in history has established himself as one of the leaders most critical of the war in the Middle East and is very sensitive to the cause of migrants, like his predecessor Francis.
