Urgence au centre cardio de Fann : les opérations à cœur ouvert à l’arrêt faute de consommables

The Pediatric Cardiology Center at Fann Hospital, the only facility in Senegal specializing in heart surgery for children and adults, is facing a disruption in its operations due to a shortage of essential medical supplies. Walf Quotidien, citing its sources, reports that no heart surgeries have been performed for over a week, leaving many patients in a state of uncertainty. Patients already hospitalized have been sent home, while surgical appointments have been suspended.

An internal source emphasizes the gravity of the situation: "Without medication, supplies, and specialized equipment, open-heart surgery is impossible." This situation is particularly critical for patients with serious illnesses, some of whom see their condition deteriorate while awaiting life-saving intervention, like Seynabou Wade, who confides: "Every day that passes is an ordeal. The doctors tell us to wait, but our condition gives us no respite."

According to hospital sources, the difficulties are linked to supply problems and administrative delays in inventory management. Faced with this paralysis, criticism is directed at the center's management, accused of failings in the organization of supply contracts. "Canceling operations due to a shortage of consumables is unacceptable when patients' lives are at stake. [...] Patients who had paid for the operation were reimbursed. They went home and are waiting to die," lamented a source interviewed by the newspaper.

Contacted by the daily newspaper of the Front de Terre press group, the head of the hospital pharmacy acknowledged a shortage of norepinephrine that had led to a reduction in operations, while qualifying the idea of a complete shutdown: “Due to the shortage of this essential product, we were forced to reduce the number of procedures. However, I want to emphasize that emergency operations were still performed.” He sought to reassure the public by announcing that a recent resupply would allow for a return to normal operations: “We received a new shipment this Tuesday from the Regional Supply Pharmacy (Pra). Consequently, cardiac surgeries will resume as normal this Wednesday.”
