Macky Sall à l'ONU : La réponse surprenante d'Aminata Touré
Has Mimi Touré softened her stance on the case of her former ally?
When questioned by Russia Today about a possible candidacy of former President Macky Sall for the position of UN Secretary-General, Aminata Touré chose not to fuel the debate further. The former head of government reiterated that she had already addressed this issue in the past and did not see the need to revisit it. Prior to this response, she had indeed made numerous media appearances to firmly oppose Macky Sall's candidacy for the UN.
“I expressed my opinion on this subject a long time ago and I won’t revisit it,” she stated, clarifying that she wasn’t currently following the matter closely. According to her, the current priorities lie elsewhere. The High Representative of the Head of State affirmed that she is dedicating the majority of her energy to the economic and social challenges facing Senegal.
"A Senegalese woman, or any woman at all, would be good too."
When pressed on the symbolic significance of appointing a Senegalese national to head the United Nations, Aminata Touré responded with a touch of humor before adopting a more serious tone. "A Senegalese woman, or a woman in general, would be good too!" she exclaimed. This response reflects her long-standing commitment to women's representation in national and international decision-making bodies. It's worth noting that Aminata Touré is a former minister under Macky Sall, for whom she also served as Prime Minister and even as campaign manager during the 2012 presidential election, before becoming, at the end of his term, one of his most ardent opponents.
However, she immediately downplayed the importance of the issue in the current context. "It's not up to me to decide, and this issue is far from being a major concern for Senegalese people right now," she emphasized. According to Aminata Touré, the real concerns of the population are more about economic challenges, ongoing financial negotiations, and the opportunities available to Senegalese youth.
She noted that the country had just finished celebrating Tabaski and must now focus on upcoming economic deadlines, particularly discussions with international financial partners. "The future of our youth demands all our energy. That is where our true priorities lie," she insisted. With this response, the former Prime Minister maintained the stance she had defended throughout the interview: avoiding political controversies and prioritizing issues related to economic development, youth employment, and institutional stability. Even when the topic of Macky Sall's potential international candidacy arose, Aminata Touré preferred to refocus the debate on the urgent challenges that, according to her, Senegalese people face daily.
