285 milliards en trois mois : Le poids énorme des charges de la dette
In three months, Senegal spent 285 billion CFA francs, not to pay off the debt itself, but the associated interest and fees. According to the quarterly budget execution report published this Monday, the financial burden "is divided between external debt (209.3 billion CFA francs, or 73.5% of the total) and domestic debt (75.7 billion CFA francs, or 26.5% of the total)." These amounts highlight the significant burden debt places on Senegal's budget. By 2026, Dakar will need 4,307.4 billion CFA francs to service the debt.
These sums reignite the debate on the necessity of an agreement with the IMF to secure long-term loans at concessional rates. The question remains whether restructuring is necessary, now that Sonko, who has always opposed the current system, is no longer Prime Minister, or whether another approach, such as restructuring, should be pursued.
