El Hadji Diouf se défend : "Sadio Mané plus grand que moi ? Non"
El Hadji Diouf, star of the 2002 generation, refuses the comparison with Sadio Mané, two-time African champion and icon of the new generation of Lions.
In an interview published in L'Equipe, the former striker preferred to talk about continuity rather than make comparisons. "(Sadio) Mané greater than me? No, I wouldn't say that. Go ahead and say that Zidane is greater than Platini, the French won't accept it. Sadio is my heir. And his will come. We're at the heart of a chain. Jules Bocandé helped me overcome my inhibitions, I helped Sadio overcome his inhibitions. But Sadio is a truly great man," explains El Hadji Diouf.
An ambassador for the national team and a constant presence in the locker room alongside the players, the former RC Lens player is also a staunch defender of Sadio Mané. "Before the last AFCON, I had a falling out with some of the veterans because they were saying I was always defending him. And he proved me right," he says.
Indeed, at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Sadio Mané led Senegal to their second title, four years after their first. These two successes have contributed to elevating the striker to the rank of the best footballer in Senegal's history, according to several experts, ahead of El Hadji Diouf. Mané, who is playing in his last World Cup in North America, is also Senegal's all-time leading scorer, with 54 goals. His club career and consistency, highlighted by a Champions League and Premier League title, also place him ahead of the former number 11 of the Lions.
