Hunted by the FBI and intercepted at the plane gate: the downfall of Senegalese businessman Muhamed Dieye in a $370 million fraud

Traqué par le FBI et intercepté à la porte de l'avion : la chute du Sénégalais Muhamed Dieye dans une fraude de 370 millions de dollars

Accused of being the mastermind of a criminal network that targeted more than $370 million in the bank accounts of thousands of Americans, Senegalese national Muhamed Dièye was indicted in Texas along with fourteen accomplices. Arrested at the last minute in New York while attempting to flee to Malaysia, the Dallas resident in his thirties faces lengthy prison sentences following a joint investigation involving, among others, the investigative office of the U.S. Embassy in Dakar .

A vast criminal network involved in identity theft and financial hacking has just been dismantled by the American justice system. The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Ryan Raybould, announced the indictment by a federal grand jury of fourteen individuals, including alleged accomplices who had infiltrated major banking and telecommunications institutions. The group is accused of orchestrating a nationwide conspiracy to hack bank accounts across the United States.

At the heart of this organization is Muhamed Dièye, a 35-year-old Dallas resident, identified by investigators as the mastermind and chief architect of the operation. Also known by several aliases such as "MJ," "JayJay," "Medici," and "Lambomotion Tony," Muhamed Dièye and his thirteen co-defendants face 22 charges, including conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The indictment, filed on August 26, was made public following the arrest in Florida of Terrence Dudley, one of the key accomplices in the case.

According to information released by the U.S. Department of Justice, Muhamed Dièye possessed a computer file containing highly confidential personal and financial information belonging to nearly 3,000 victims. The total amount of assets held in the targeted accounts exceeded $373 million (approximately 225 billion CFA francs). Between July 2023 and November 2024, members of the network stole identification data, fabricated fake official documents, impersonated account holders, and manipulated telephone lines using SIM swapping . This method allowed them to intercept security codes and empty accounts held at major banks such as Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Truist Bank, and Charles Schwab, notably succeeding in attempting a fraudulent transfer of $2 million to Emirates Islamic Bank.

The capture of the alleged mastermind involved a spectacular operation at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. After emptying his Dallas residence and shipping his belongings to Kenya, Muhamed Dièye was preparing to fly with his family to Malaysia on a one-way flight.

Alerted, agents from the Diplomatic Security Service and the prosecutor's office obtained an emergency arrest warrant. Stopped while scanning his boarding pass at the access gate, the suspect violently resisted arrest, attempting to destroy one of his mobile phones which contained searches on purchasing real estate in Malaysia, before being subdued by several federal agents.

Currently held in pretrial detention in Texas after the federal government blocked his initial bail granted in New York, Muhamed Dièye faces up to 30 years in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, 20 years for wire fraud, and a mandatory minimum sentence of two consecutive years for aggravated identity theft. The investigation has involved a broad coalition of U.S. federal agencies, including the FBI, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security, with significant support from the U.S. Embassy's Office of Foreign Criminal Investigations in Dakar.
