À Freetown, Bassirou Diomaye Faye plaide pour une CEDEAO rénovée et tournée vers l'action
Fifty years after its creation, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) finds itself at a critical turning point in its history. Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, for the Summit on the Future of Regional Integration, the heads of state of the sub-region addressed the major challenges threatening the political and social stability of the West African bloc. It was in this delicate context, marked by growing security threats and an unfavorable international environment, that the President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a speech focused on truth and hope.
Considering that the time for mere observation is over, the Senegalese Head of State called for a strategic overhaul of the organization. For President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, it is imperative to build a renewed ECOWAS, truly capable of offering its people—and in particular its youth—the peace, security, and prosperity that were at the heart of the founding fathers' vision.
Emphasizing the significance of diplomatic actions, the Senegalese president reaffirmed that the Declaration of Commitment to the Pact for the Future of Regional Integration could not remain a mere statement of principle. Stating that this declaration binds and obligates all member states, he confirmed Senegal's determination, drawing on its pan-African tradition, to establish itself as a key player in the realization of this integration.
