The image is unbearable and perfectly encapsulates the tragedy faced by thousands of migrants in South Africa. At the site of the former Durban Drive-In, now a temporary shelter, a Malawian father literally broke down under the weight of his emotions.

This man is among the many foreign nationals gathered by South African authorities as part of a large-scale immigration control and repatriation operation.

It is a poignant testimony, imbued with profound despair, that this father gave to those on the ground. Having initially come to South Africa with the hope of finding work and building a better future, he now finds himself facing nothingness.

"No home. No mattress. No promises for tomorrow. Just a father, and a baby who doesn't understand why he's here," he confided, his voice breaking, clutching his child to him.

Today, the time for his forced return has come. Empty-handed, with only his child and very meager belongings, he is preparing to board the repatriation convoys to Malawi.

Like him, hundreds are waiting at this Durban site for the authorities to get their logistics in place. Between administrative formalities and endless waiting, the fate of these families now hangs in the balance between outright deportation and voluntary repatriation to their countries of origin.
