Bénin : Le président Wadagni gracie un militant du parti d’opposition Les démocrates
In Benin, President Romuald Wadagni granted presidential pardons to 369 prisoners on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the country's accession to national and international sovereignty on August 1, 2026. Among these prisoners are Julien Kandé Kansou, an activist of the opposition party Les Démocrates.
He was serving a 2-year prison sentence
He was sentenced in April 2026 to two years in prison and a fine of 10 million CFA francs for "harassment via an electronic system" and "incitement to rebellion." The 35-year-old had been in pretrial detention since June 2025.
The justice system accused him of making critical remarks about a member of the government who was proposing the introduction of taxes on internet connections and of calling for a "revolution at the ballot box" during the last elections.
His lawyer hopes that "things will change more on the political front."
Following his release last Saturday, his lawyer, Augustin Aballo, expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic, urging him to continue along this path. He said he hoped that "the political situation will change further."
"The people will never forget everything that will be done to strengthen unity," he added.
It is worth remembering that several so-called "political" prisoners, such as former minister Reckya Madougou and professor of constitutional law Joël Aivo, are still languishing behind bars.
