Burkina Faso : Une nouvelle loi sur les libertés religieuses adoptée
The Transitional Legislative Assembly adopted, on June 20, 2026, a new law on religious freedoms aimed at better regulating religious activities while preserving public order and social cohesion.
The text notably provides for the mandatory affiliation of religious associations and communities to a recognized umbrella organization, as well as the creation of a national body responsible for monitoring, training and certification in the religious field.
The law also authorises state intervention in places of worship in the event of a threat to security or public order, and permits the closure or demolition of religious buildings deemed dangerous after a procedure.
Furthermore, proselytizing is prohibited for public officials in the performance of their duties. The financing of religious organizations will also be more strictly regulated, with the requirement that they deposit their accounts at the Treasury Deposit Bank.
The text also strengthens the fight against religiously motivated hate speech, which is punishable by prison sentences and fines, while also providing for sanctions against the desecration or destruction of places and objects of worship.
