Burkina: la junte renforce la sécurité dans la capitale Ouagadougou
The ruling junta in Burkina Faso, a Sahelian country facing jihadist attacks, has reinforced security in Ouagadougou and inside the country, following unprecedented coordinated attacks in its ally and neighbor Mali, AFP learned Wednesday from security sources.
On Tuesday, the Burkinabe Ministry of Security announced the launch of Operation "WIBGA-2" aimed at strengthening security throughout the territory.
He calls on the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior, particularly around sensitive infrastructure such as barracks, airports, administrative buildings and other facilities of national interest.
"A major security operation has been deployed in Ouagadougou and other parts of the country," a police source told AFP.
"In Ouagadougou, police teams have been deployed at strategic intersections in the capital," a second police source explained.
"The teams will also be conducting operational intelligence searches related to crime and terrorism," she added.
These measures come in the wake of unprecedented attacks by jihadists allied with rebels in neighbouring Mali, an ally of Burkina Faso and Niger, all three ruled by juntas that came to power after coups between 2020 and 2023.
The three countries, united within the confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), are facing jihadist attacks from groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization.
"The army is maintaining the state of alert because we are at war. Vigilance and watchfulness are still essential, so this is not exceptional even if the situation in Mali requires more rigor and vigilance," a Burkinabe military source emphasizes.
Niger's military regime cancelled traditional May Day parades across the country on Wednesday for security reasons, the Nigerien Ministry of Labour announced in a statement.
Burkina Faso had announced a simulation of a "terrorist attack" on April 11 in its economic capital Bobo-Dioulasso, near the airport area and the headquarters of the National Culture Week, whose festivities were launched last Saturday by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who has been leading the country since a coup in September 2022.
On Wednesday, the government of Ivory Coast, a country bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, assured that its borders were secure, while acknowledging that the country expected "influxes of refugees" from its neighbors, according to its spokesman Amadou Coulibaly, following a cabinet meeting.
