Côte d'Ivoire: 39 morts dans un accident de la route mi-juillet, selon un nouveau bilan
Thirty-nine people were killed and 45 injured in a road accident in mid-July in western Ivory Coast, the Ministry of Transport announced Wednesday in a new report.
The previous report stated 24 dead and 36 injured.
Fatal accidents are frequent in Ivory Coast, as in other African countries, mainly due to the poor condition of some roads, vehicles, and the lack of civic responsibility of drivers.
On July 13, a bus belonging to a transport company, traveling from Odienné (north) to Yamoussoukro (center), "ran off the road and ended up in the Bafing River" in the west of the country, the ministry said at a press conference.
The death toll now stands at "39 (people) killed" and "45 injured", he reported, based on the initial findings of the investigation, which points to an excess of passengers.
"Almost all of the injured have returned home after receiving the necessary treatment for their condition," he added.
The ministry also announced national measures to strengthen road safety.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are killed on average each year on the roads of Ivory Coast, according to the Ministry of Transport, for 1.5 million vehicles in circulation.
