Ivory Coast: Man arrested after demolitions that shock Abidjan

Côte d’Ivoire : un homme arrêté après des démolitions qui choquent Abidjan

The Koumassi Camp case is causing outrage after the arrest of a man accused of using a fake court document.

In Abidjan, a demolition case is shaking Ivory Coast. A 76-year-old businessman was arrested after the destruction of part of the Koumassi Camp neighborhood, an operation that left many families without housing solutions.

The affair erupted after the demolitions carried out on June 3, 2026. Bulldozers razed a large area of this neighborhood near the city center, provoking anger and incomprehension among the affected residents.

A disputed court document

The suspect, Jacques Alloui Brou, is accused of using a document presented as a court order to have homes demolished. He had publicly claimed to be behind the operation and to possess a court order authorizing him to act.

But the Abidjan prosecutor's office disputes this version of events. Prosecutor Oumar Braman Koné stated that the document brandished by the suspect did not authorize the destruction of buildings. An investigation was therefore opened, followed by an arrest warrant.

The man was finally arrested on Thursday in the Port-Bouët district. Authorities must now determine exact responsibilities in a case that touches on property rights, public order, and the protection of displaced families.

Families left without housing

The social tragedy lies at the heart of the case. Several thousand people have reportedly lost their homes in Koumassi Camp, without any offer of immediate relocation. For the families involved, the issue is therefore not only legal, but also deeply human.

Abidjan has been experiencing large-scale eviction operations for several years, often justified by security concerns, flood risks, or urban planning. But in this specific case, the authorities maintain that the demolition was not ordered by the state.

This nuance fuels outrage. Many residents want to understand how such a large-scale operation could have been carried out if the document used did not legally allow for the demolition of homes.

A sensitive matter for Abidjan

The actions could be classified as disturbing the peace, violence, and willful destruction of property. These offenses can be punished by several years in prison.

Beyond the legal proceedings, this case brings the vulnerability of Abidjan's working-class neighborhoods back to the forefront of the debate. For the affected families, the urgent need remains to find shelter and obtain answers regarding responsibility.

The investigation will have to determine who approved the operation, who carried it out, and why the residents found themselves facing bulldozers without sufficient protection.
