World Cup: A lawyer dies celebrating Ghana's victory against Panama

The Ghanaian legal community and Black Stars supporters are plunged into deep mourning. What should have been an evening of popular jubilation turned into a nightmare. Sara Araba Tettey, a promising 26-year-old lawyer, tragically lost her life on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, succumbing to a heart attack during the celebrations of Ghana's victory over Panama.

According to eyewitness accounts, the young woman was watching the Black Stars' opening match of the FIFA World Cup with her friends. The atmosphere was electric at the Standard Hostel, a private student residence located in Bomso, very close to the KNUST University campus in Kumasi.

At the final whistle sealing Ghana's victory, an explosion of joy filled the room. It was precisely in the midst of these scenes of jubilation that the tragedy occurred: Sara suddenly collapsed, unconscious.

Panicked, her friends and those present at the scene reacted immediately by urgently transporting her to the KNUST hospital.

On site, medical staff and emergency teams did everything they could to revive her. They performed intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the doctor could only pronounce her dead shortly afterward.

This sudden loss has sparked an immense wave of emotion throughout the country. Sara Araba Tettey was not only a fervent supporter; she was considered one of the future great names in Ghanaian law.

A graduate of the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Faculty of Law, she had just been sworn in to the Ghana Bar earlier this year and was already working at the firm O & A Legal Consult.

Her former classmates and colleagues, in shock, describe a young woman who was "intelligent, hardworking, deeply compassionate and full of promise".

For the time being, the deceased's body has been placed in the hospital morgue pending the autopsy and the announcement of funeral arrangements.
