Former First Lady of The Gambia, Tuti Faal, attended the National People's Party (NPP) Diaspora Congress in Seattle, USA, last weekend. During her visit, she urged Gambians to remain united and put the nation's best interests above their political differences.

“My dear fellow Gambians, politics is not synonymous with infighting or quarrels. We are brothers and sisters. Whoever wins an election is chosen by Allah and will leave office when the time comes. So, let us practice politics with civility and conviviality,” said the former GAMTEL employee.

He was "sometimes harsh in his remarks"

She said she always worked for the unity of Gambians, even though her then-husband sometimes crossed the line. He was "sometimes harsh in his remarks," but I urged him to "remain courteous to the people," Tuti Faal said. She recalled welcoming opposition leader Hamat Bah to State House after his defeat in the 1996 presidential election.

Anecdotes about Hamat Bah and Ousainou Darboe

A few weeks before the election, he vowed to defeat Jammeh at the polls and take up residence in the Presidency to enjoy Tuti Fall's tea. "When Jammeh won the elections, I told him I was going to invite Hamat Bah to have tea with us at the State House. He accepted, and Hamat was invited. We had tea with him, joked around a bit, and then he left," the former First Lady recalled.

She also recalled speaking with veteran opposition leader Ousainou Darboe during an impromptu meeting in Bakau. “I remember going into a shop in Bakau when someone came in and told me that Ousainou Darboe was waiting in a car outside. I went out, greeted him, and we exchanged a few words. He is an elder, and we are taught to respect our elders. Politics should not divide us. We should not fight or kill each other over it. The Gambia belongs to us. We must not divide it. Let us conduct our politics with restraint, patience, and discipline,” she urged.
