Guinea-Bissau: Cape Verde demands the release of Domingos Simões Pereira

Guinée-Bissau : Le Cap-Vert exige la libération de Domingos Simões Pereira

Since Friday, July 10, 2026, Domingos Simões Pereira, president of the PAIGC and figure of the PAI–Terra Ranka coalition, has been held in pre-trial detention at the second brigade of the public order police (POP) in Bissau, by decision of the superior military court.

This measure, linked to the investigation into his alleged involvement in the attempted coup of October 2025, continues to generate a wave of national and international reactions.

Yesterday, Tuesday, July 14, the government of Cape Verde launched a solemn appeal for the rapid release of Domingos Simões Pereira and the full restoration of his constitutional guarantees.

In an official statement, Praia expressed its "deep concern" over the ongoing events in Guinea-Bissau and denounced the coercive measure applied to the opposition leader.

Cape Verde insists on respect for the universal values that underpin peaceful coexistence, human dignity, and the rule of law. It reaffirms its willingness to contribute to a concerted solution, in coordination with ECOWAS and the CPLP, to guarantee a peaceful, inclusive, and lasting resolution to the crisis.

This appeal from Cape Verde adds to the voices already expressed by human rights organizations and civic platforms in Guinea-Bissau, which denounce the instrumentalization of justice for political purposes.

The Guinean League for Human Rights (LGDH) has demanded the immediate release of the opposition figure, while civil society coalitions are calling on the international community to address its silence.

Cape Verde's reaction could mark a turning point in the regional mobilization. By aligning itself with constitutional principles and calling for a negotiated solution, Praia seeks to increase diplomatic pressure on Bissau.

It remains to be seen whether ECOWAS and the CPLP will respond to this call and engage in active mediation to prevent an escalation of the crisis.
