Guinée : De retour au Sommet de la Cedeao, Doumbouya décoche des piques à l’organisation communautaire
On Sunday, July 19th, Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, hosted the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Summit. Returning to this high-level meeting after a four-year absence, Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya delivered a speech critical of the regional organization.
"The vision of the founding fathers of our community was neither punitive nor repressive."
He specifically criticized it for its punitive decisions against certain member countries.
“Sanctions are not the solution. Our sub-region has too often chosen sanctions as its first reflex when they should be the last resort. The vision of the founding fathers of our community was neither punitive nor repressive. It was of unwavering clarity: that of a space of shared prosperity,” said the Guinean president.
He called on ECOWAS to henceforth take measures tailored to each situation. "Malaria and cancer are not treated with the same remedy. Each illness requires its own treatment. Each situation requires its own response," Doumbouya declared. Beyond the punitive measures he denounced, the Guinean leader called for a profound reform of ECOWAS.
