Guinée: emprisonné pour triche, un élève de 17 ans meurt en détention
Tragedy has shaken the Guinean education system. Mamadou Djouma Bah, a 17-year-old high school senior, died in prison from complications related to sickle cell disease. The teenager had been imprisoned for cheating on the baccalaureate exam. His incarceration, deemed disproportionate by many observers, turned tragic.
Suffering from sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease requiring regular medical monitoring, the young man reportedly did not receive appropriate care during his detention. His health deteriorated until it proved fatal.
Devastated, the victim's father told the BBC that he holds the authorities responsible for his son's death. He believes the imprisonment of a high school student for cheating on an exam and the lack of medical follow-up are directly to blame. The case has sparked outrage in Guinea and raises questions about the proportionality of punishments in schools, as well as respect for the right to health for those in detention.
