La Gambie va indemniser les victimes de Jammeh avec 2,5 millions de dollars restitués par les Etats-Unis
Gambia has received $2.5 million from the liquidation in the United States of a property belonging to ousted President Yahya Jammeh, funds which will be used to compensate his victims, the National Commission for Reparations announced Tuesday.
Former dictator Yahya Jammeh is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from state coffers during his years in power (1994-2017), allocating public funds for personal gain, while also committing serious human rights abuses.
In a statement, the Commission informs "victims, survivors and the public that it has received $2.5 million (€2.2 million) from the confiscation and sale of former President Yahya Jammeh's property in Potomac," near Washington.
"These funds have been directly deposited into the account of the Reparations Fund (of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, editor's note) at the Central Bank of The Gambia and will be used solely for the payment of reparations" to the victims of Mr. Jammeh, according to the statement.
The text emphasizes that this marks an "important step in advancing the implementation of the recommendations" of this commission, which examined the atrocities of the Jammeh era and which the Gambian government endorsed in 2022.
These crimes included: the execution of 240 to 250 people by state agents, enforced disappearances, rapes, acts of torture, arbitrary detentions, and even the forced administration of a fake AIDS treatment.
The funds received from the United States "will be used for swift and comprehensive reparations to eligible victims" in accordance with the commission's mandate, it adds, assuring that they will be managed "transparently".
The commission recommended a total payment of $3.7 million to $4 million to fully cover the identified repair cases.
The very popular youth movement "Gambians Against Looted Assets" (GALA) had on October 8 called on President Adama Barrow, in power since 2017, to react publicly to a report published in March which took stock of the sale and transfer of Yahya Jammeh's assets.
The current head of state is a candidate in the presidential election scheduled for December 5 for a third term, which is being criticized.
In exile in Equatorial Guinea since January 2017, after his defeat to Adama Barrow in the December 2016 election, Yahya Jammeh retains significant support in Gambia and could influence the election.
