Le Maroc relance le débat sur la souveraineté des enclaves espagnoles de Ceuta et Melilla
In an interview given Wednesday, August 12, to the Saudi channel Asharq News, Abdellatif Ouahbi, the Moroccan Minister of Justice, designated the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla as a territorial claim of Morocco. Madrid was quick to respond: "The territorial integrity of the two enclaves has never been and never will be," warned the Spanish authorities.
Morocco's demands are not new, but they are being made today in a particular context, in view of the events of two weeks ago, when 70,000 people tried to illegally cross the border that separates the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Moroccan territory.
In an interview with Asharq News, Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi referred to Ceuta and Melilla as "occupied enclaves," asserting that Morocco's claim to sovereignty over these two territories is not new. According to him, Morocco "systematically" raises the issue during negotiations with Spain. "This issue remains relevant. We are committed to our territory. We are handling this matter patiently; the long-term objective is to reach a solution through dialogue," he stated.
Spain was quick to react. Earlier that day, the Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, held a press conference. When questioned by journalists about the statements made by the Moroccan Minister of Justice, she replied: "It must be stated very clearly that Ceuta and Melilla are not only Spanish: they are quintessentially Spanish! And it is precisely for this reason that they are untouchable."
His position was reinforced by the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, who attempted to end the debate by stating that "the territorial integrity of Spain has never been a subject of discussion, and never will be."
