Les 10 pays les plus prospères d’Afrique en 2026, selon le dernier classement
A nation's prosperity is not measured solely by the size of its economy. While GDP measures economic output, true prosperity is defined by quality healthcare, access to quality education, individual freedoms, strong institutions, economic opportunities, and a supportive society.
This broader perspective is reflected in the Legatum 2026 Prosperity Index, which ranks 167 countries according to a new methodology designed to ensure that strengths in one area cannot fully compensate for weaknesses in another.
The index assesses countries according to three main areas: development (the level of development of a country), freedom (the degree of personal, economic and institutional freedom) and society (the strength of social relations and institutions).
Together, these areas are measured across ten pillars covering fields such as health, education, living conditions, governance, the investment environment, economic freedom, security, and social capital.
Unlike previous editions, the 2026 index introduces what Legatum calls the "p-mean", a new mathematical approach that penalizes countries with significant weaknesses in a major area.
According to this think tank, prosperity requires balanced performance across all areas, meaning that exceptional wealth alone cannot compensate for poor governance, weak institutions, or social fragmentation.
The latest ranking shows that Switzerland is now the most prosperous country in the world, ahead of several traditional European leaders, thanks to consistently strong performance across all areas, without major weaknesses.
In Africa, however, the situation is more mixed. Mauritius retains its position as the continent's most prosperous economy, while Botswana, Tunisia, and Morocco continue to outperform many major African economies.
Country Global Ranking
1 Maurice 45th
2 Botswana 70th
3 Tunisia 75th
4 Morocco 76th
5 Namibia 77th
6 Algeria 83rd
7 South Africa 86th
8 Ghana 88th
9 Gabon 93rd
10 Senegal. 100th
Mauritius remains a benchmark for prosperity in Africa, ranking 45th globally. Its performance is based on relatively high scores in three areas, particularly in terms of freedom and social well-being, allowing it to outperform much wealthier economies on the continent.
Botswana ranks second, continuing to benefit from decades of political stability and prudent economic management, although the index suggests room for improvement for several development indicators.
North Africa also performed well, with Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria all ranking among the continent's top six. Their relatively balanced institutional frameworks and social indicators contributed to improving their overall ranking despite persistent economic pressures.
South Africa, the leading industrialized economy on the African continent, ranks seventh on the continent and 86th globally. Despite relatively good performance in terms of economic development and business climate, weaker social indicators – particularly family integrity and social cohesion – continue to weigh down its overall prosperity score.
Ghana is the highest-ranked country in West Africa; it occupies eighth place in Africa and 88th globally, followed by Gabon and Senegal, which complete the continent's top 10.
This ranking also shows that the size of an economy does not necessarily translate into prosperity. Several small African economies outperform large ones thanks to stronger institutions, greater individual freedoms, and more resilient social systems.
As African governments compete to attract investment, improve living standards and accelerate economic transformation, the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026 suggests that sustainable prosperity depends not only on the growth of national income, but also on building societies where opportunity, freedom and institutional strength advance in tandem.

La Tunisie qui a beaucoup de mal a s'accrocher.
Le Maroc où la majorité de son peuple vit au dessous du seuil de pauvreté se voit classer mieux que l'Algérie.
Arrêtez vos absurdités.
