Liberia : l’ex-vice-présidente Jewel Howard-Taylor inculpée pour trafic de drogue
Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been charged in an investigation targeting a transnational drug trafficking network. The politician was intercepted Wednesday, August 19, at Roberts International Airport as she was preparing to leave the country.
Drug trafficking and money laundering charges
The Liberian Ministry of Justice says Jewel Howard-Taylor faces multiple charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and importing controlled substances without authorization.
The list released by the authorities also includes the alleged sale, distribution, and transportation of prohibited products. Charges of criminal solicitation, facilitation, and conspiracy have also been announced.
After being detained at the airport, the former executive was taken to the national police headquarters. Her lawyer indicated that he had met with his client but explained that he could not organize her defense until he received the official documents detailing the charges.
At this stage, these accusations do not constitute a conviction. Jewel Howard-Taylor remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Three foreigners are also wanted.
Three foreign nationals were charged in absentia in the same investigation. They are two Croatians and a Ukrainian, presented by the authorities as alleged members of the network.
The Liberian government asserts that it will use national and international channels to try to locate and arrest them. The Minister of Justice has promised that no political protection will be granted to individuals against whom admissible evidence is gathered.
This case comes amid a intensified fight against cocaine trafficking in West Africa. In July, Liberia announced a record seizure valued at several hundred million dollars. However, authorities have not publicly established that the charges against Jewel Howard-Taylor are legally linked to this earlier operation.
A former number two in the country
Jewel Howard-Taylor, 63, served as Vice President of Liberia from January 2018 to January 2024 alongside George Weah. She previously served in the Senate and headed the country's Central Bank.
Her political career is also linked to her former husband, Charles Taylor. The former Liberian president was convicted by an international court for supporting rebel groups responsible for atrocities during the civil war in Sierra Leone.
When George Weah came to power, Jewel Howard-Taylor's position in the new government had already attracted considerable attention. AfrikMag revisited the relationship between the president and his vice president at the time.
A sensitive matter for Liberia
The indictment of a former vice president now places the Liberian justice system under intense pressure. Authorities will have to demonstrate that the investigation is based on solid evidence and that it respects the rights of all those implicated.
The case could also provoke strong political tensions. Jewel Howard-Taylor retains significant influence, and her supporters could denounce the proceedings as motivated by internal rivalries.
The next expected step is the formal presentation of charges in court. This will allow the defense to respond to the accusations and challenge the evidence gathered by investigators.
