Liberté d’expression au Mali : Un vidéaste inculpé après des critiques contre la transition
Freedom of expression continues to raise concerns in Mali. Videographer Djiby Barry, known by his legal name Djibril Sangaré, has been remanded in custody and charged by the Malian justice system after making critical remarks targeting the transition and the Malian president, General Assimi Goïta.
Popular on social media, particularly within the Fulani community, Djiby Barry regularly posts videos on current events and social issues. It was one of his recent posts that led to legal action against him.
In this video, he questioned the record of the transition and pointed out that General Assimi Goïta had never been elected by popular suffrage.
The videographer was arrested on July 24, 2026, by the investigation unit of the specialized judicial unit dedicated to combating cybercrime. His arrest occurred while he was attending a concert held at the Bamako International Conference Center (CICB).
After several days in police custody, Djiby Barry was brought before the prosecutor of the Judicial Division on July 27, before appearing before an investigating judge the following day. The judge ordered his detention and charged him with "undermining the credibility of the State" and "publishing false information through an information and communication system."
The case, however, is not limited to the video that led to his arrest. The investigating magistrate also ordered the translation of several other videos published by the videographer in the Fulani language. These videos notably concern the eviction of livestock markets in Bamako and the rise in animal prices in the lead-up to the Tabaski festival.
