Mali : Le procureur général près la Cour suprême précise les effets de la grâce présidentielle accordée au Français Yan Vézilier
In Mali, Yann Vézilier, the French officer sentenced to 20 years in prison last June for undermining the security of the Malian state, received a presidential pardon on Thursday, August 13, 2026. This act of clemency granted to the DGSE agent has legal effects, explains the Attorney General at the Supreme Court, Mamoudou Timbo, to ORTM (the national television).
"This conviction remains and is recorded and mentioned in the individual's criminal record."
“The President of the Transition was simply exercising a right granted to him by the Constitution. He deemed it necessary to grant a pardon to the convicted individual. The effects of a presidential pardon are clearly defined by law. A presidential pardon prevents the execution of a criminal sentence, but in principle, it is understood that his criminal responsibility has been recognized, and consequently, he was duly sentenced by the judges who determined that his case warranted 20 years in prison. The pardon, therefore, does not erase the facts. It does not invalidate what the judges determined to be guilty, which led to the sentencing. This conviction remains, is recorded, and is noted in the criminal record, serving as a warning against recidivism,” the prosecutor stated.
He also noted that this presidential pardon has diplomatic repercussions. "This act of clemency, besides benefiting the convicted person, also helps to ease tensions related to the arrest of the foreign national by the Malian state," said Mamadou Timbo.
