Mali: retour de l'eau courante à Bamako après un sabotage sur le réseau électrique
Access to running water returned to normal in Bamako on Wednesday after massive outages across the city since Sunday due to an act of sabotage on a power line supplying the capital, AFP journalists observed.
The electricity network, which was completely interrupted for several days, remains very disrupted.
This electricity shortage led to the interruption of the supply of running water in the capital and for several days, the people of Bamako had to turn to private boreholes to obtain water.
"We have had fuel to restart our turbines. We have taken measures to no longer depend completely on Energie du Mali (EDM). Now, we are 100% operational," a technical manager of Mali's drinking water management company, Somagep, told AFP.
This news was met with relief by residents interviewed by AFP, in the middle of the hot season.
"Thankfully everything is back to normal. It was unbearable at home," rejoiced a woman from Bamako who had not been able to wash for several days and who spoke under the condition of anonymity due to the security situation.
"The water we could get from the neighbor's well, with the number of people in the line, was only good for cooking and drinking water," she continued.
An official at the Bamako District Hospital told AFP that they had been giving borehole water to patients due to a lack of running water.
"We have a borehole in the district hospital for supplying the toilets and for hygiene. Usually, we do not advise patients to drink its water, but, with two days of tap cut off, what could we do?" he explains.
This disruption comes as the jihadists of JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, have been imposing road blockades for several months on the main routes leading to the Malian capital, burning dozens of buses, trucks carrying goods and fuel to suffocate the economy.
Mali has been gripped by a deep security crisis since 2012, fueled in particular by violence perpetrated by groups affiliated with the jihadist organizations Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as by community-based criminal groups and Tuareg separatist movements. This is compounded by a severe economic crisis.
