Maroc: plusieurs femmes accusent de violences sexuelles le cardinal-archevêque de Rabat (enquête AFP)
At least five women have accused the Archbishop of Rabat, Cristobal Lopez Romero, of sexual violence, according to an AFP investigation. The allegations prompted a Vatican investigation and led the cardinal to step down on Tuesday.
The 74-year-old Spanish cleric denies the allegations.
AFP spoke with a retired woman involved in the Church, who did not allow her to reveal the content of her testimony at this stage, but who reported repeated sexual assaults.
She also consulted the written testimony of another woman, addressed to the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican embassy in the Moroccan capital.
She accuses the cardinal of "physical gestures" which she "perceived as inappropriate", including "particularly strong and prolonged hugs" and "an attempt at physical closeness which could be likened to an attempt" to kiss her, which she says she escaped "with great difficulty".
A source within the diocese also told AFP that they had been informed that at least three other women had said they had been victims of "similar incidents", remarks made in particular during confession.
When contacted by AFP regarding these allegations, the archbishop said he had "responded to (his) ecclesiastical superiors." "I will continue to fully cooperate with them in the investigation" that has been opened, he continued, asserting that he had "committed neither assault nor violence nor sexual harassment."
"During this period of investigation, so as not to hinder it, I will take a step back, not presiding over any public celebration, and not intervening in any pastoral activity," he added in another statement addressed to the faithful of the diocese and transmitted to AFP.
The Holy See did not immediately respond to AFP's requests for comment.
Chosen by the Pope, the cardinals form the inner circle of the highest dignitaries of the Church, tasked with assisting him in his governance. Those under the age of 80 also participate in the conclave to elect his successor.
During the conclave of May 2025, Monsignor Lopez Romero was among the most prominent and influential cardinals, and several media outlets had even presented him as a "papabile," a term designating cardinals considered to have the best chance of being elected pope.
