The presence of Nigerian nationals begging in the streets of Accra and several other locations in Ghana has prompted a reaction from the authorities. Several of them have been arrested and then repatriated to Niamey.
This operation is part of the Ghanaian government's stated desire to put an end to what it calls "professional begging" in its territory.
The authorities intend to strengthen measures against organized begging, particularly in the country's main urban centers.
The Nigerien nationals involved were returned to Niger following their arrest. This decision comes as Ghana seeks to better regulate the presence of certain foreigners on its streets and to combat activities considered a form of organized begging.
