Mohammed VI baptise la plus longue autoroute d'Afrique du nom de Donald Trump !
This is a strong political gesture that seals the diplomatic rapprochement between Rabat and Washington. On the decision of King Mohammed VI, the expressway linking southern Morocco to the territory of Western Sahara has been officially named the "Donald J. Trump Highway".
This announcement was made public through a letter addressed on July 2nd by the Moroccan monarch to the American president. In it, the King expresses his gratitude for the "historic recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara in 2020" by the American administration.
Stretching 1,055 kilometers, the infrastructure is touted as the longest road in Africa. The construction, which began in 2015 at an estimated total cost of 850 million euros, extends from Tiznit to Laâyoune, before continuing on to Dakhla.
As a reminder, Western Sahara—a former Spanish colony rich in resources—has been the subject of a fifty-year conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front independence movement, supported by Algeria. In December 2020, Donald Trump gave official US support to the Moroccan autonomy plan, in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel.
Reacting on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump expressed his delight at this "immense honor," stating that he was looking forward to traveling along this strategic road infrastructure.
