Niger: 16 soldats tués vendredi lors d'une attaque "terroriste" dans l'Ouest (média d’État)
Sixteen soldiers were killed and twenty-three wounded on Friday in a "terrorist" attack in western Niger, near Mali and Burkina Faso, the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP, state media) reported on Sunday.
Niger, a vast Sahelian country, has been facing deadly attacks from jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group for a decade. The term "terrorists" is often used by the authorities to refer to them.
The country has been ruled since July 2023 by a military regime that is struggling to contain this violence.
"A terrorist attack targeting a military detachment in the Téra area (Tillabéri region) resulted in 16 martyrs and 23 wounded, including nine seriously, on the friendly side (army) on Friday, July 17," the ANP stated.
She also reported that "15 terrorists were killed".
According to a local source, the attack occurred "on Friday afternoon on the Bankilaré-Téra road near the village of Doungouro".
"Operations to search for the enemy, to sweep and to secure the area continue," according to the ANP.
A security source confirmed that "sweeping operations are being carried out" in the area.
