Niger: La société algérienne ENAFOR lance le forage d'un puits d'exploration pétrolière dans la région d'Agadez
This is a powerful symbol of Niger-Algeria cooperation. On Thursday, August 13, 2026, ENAFOR, the Algerian drilling company and subsidiary of Sonatrach, launched drilling operations for the "Kafra South-East 1" exploration well in the Agadez region. The ceremony took place in the presence of Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, and his Algerian counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb. Also present were Niger's Minister of Defense, General Salifou Modi, and his counterpart from the Ministry of Petroleum, Hamadou Tini.
The drilling is expected to reach a depth of 3900 meters
The Kafra oil field is located approximately 85 km from the Algerian border, 1400 km from Niamey (by road), 700 km from Agadez, and 500 km from the mining town of Arlit. The drilling is expected to reach a depth of 3900 meters.
To meet the deadlines set, SIPEX Niger, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, deployed significant resources on site, including all heavy drilling equipment, a specialized workshop and a fully autonomous and equipped living base.
Technology transfer and training
This project has a beneficial aspect for Niger, in that it will involve a transfer of technology. The Algerian side has also committed to training managers and workers in the hydrocarbons sector. Technical cooperation with SONIDEP, the Nigerien National Petroleum Company, is also planned.
