Rare séisme de magnitude 5,6 en Egypte, pas de victimes
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck eastern Egypt in the early hours of Monday, according to the Egyptian National Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, with no casualties reported in initial assessments.
The earthquake, which woke up AFP journalists in Cairo, occurred at 03:00 local time (00:00 GMT), about forty kilometers north of Suez.
It was also felt by residents of Alexandria, on the Mediterranean, as well as as far as the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the earthquake at 5.0.
No casualties were immediately reported, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the Egyptian Red Crescent, which called on residents to stay away from old and dilapidated buildings, which are numerous in working-class neighborhoods in Egypt.
Three families were evacuated from a building on the verge of collapse in a northern Cairo neighborhood, and a balcony collapsed near the epicenter in Suez.
Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered the implementation of an emergency plan across the country in case further damage occurs, and asked rescue services to be at their "maximum level of preparedness".
Powerful earthquakes are unusual in Egypt.
The deadliest earthquake in the country's modern history occurred in October 1992, when a 5.8 magnitude quake struck Cairo, killing more than 500 people and displacing thousands.
