RDC: Le premier volontaire reçoit un vaccin expérimental contre Ebola
Oxford University has launched a phase I clinical trial for an experimental vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, responsible for the 17th outbreak in the DRC. The first volunteer has already received a dose.
Dubbed "ChAdOx1 BDBV", this vaccine uses the same technology as the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19. The study, supported by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) and praised by Africa CDC (African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), will evaluate safety and immune response in 50 healthy volunteers.
This trial comes in an emergency context. In the DRC, five eastern provinces are affected, with a total of 3,262 cases and 1,437 deaths, according to authorities. The peak of infections has not yet been reached, and until now, no vaccine or treatment existed against this strain of Bundibugyo.
Experts consider this a key step in the fight against Ebola. The development of this vaccine candidate could lead to a better response to future epidemics in Africa.
