Steve Amoussou, le cyberactiviste kidnappé au Togo puis condamné au Bénin en 2024 est sorti de prison
Steve Amoussou is free to move about. The cyberactivist, tried and convicted as "Brother Hounvi" (the nickname of a famous columnist known for his scathing criticism of the Talon regime), left the Akpro-Missérété civil prison on the morning of Thursday, August 20. He had been sentenced in June 2025 to two years in prison for "electronic harassment and incitement to revolt."
He "didn't have time to think when they threw him into a van."
His arrest dates back to August 12, 2024, in Lomé, Togo, under rather unusual circumstances. According to his lawyer, Aboubakar Baparapé, he was approached by burly men on a street in the Togolese capital. He "didn't have time to think before they threw him into a van," headed for Benin. The lawyer denounced the arrest as "a kidnapping."
The prosecutor in Lomé will agree with him in the aftermath, publishing a statement in which he mentions four "kidnappers" who "took (Steve Amoussou) into a vehicle with Beninese registration" before heading towards the border "on the eastern side".
The kidnappers in question were sentenced by the Beninese justice system in September 2024.
