Tchad: après avoir été libéré, l'opposant Succès Masra prône la réconciliation
Succès Masra, former Prime Minister and leader of the main opposition party in Chad, recently released, called on Saturday for reconciliation with President Mahamat Idriss Déby before several hundred activists gathered at his party headquarters, an AFP journalist observed.
"We need forgiveness, unity and peace. Gathered here today, we reiterate to the entire nation our commitment to building a reconciled Chad," he chanted to the crowd.
The main opponent of the Chadian president was released overnight from Friday to Saturday, after more than a year in prison. He was serving a 20-year sentence for inciting hatred and "complicity in murder," handed down at the end of a trial that Human Rights Watch (HRW) described as "politically motivated."
"My conviction is to work together. We are available from tomorrow morning. They know that outside of the government, we are the main political force. Nothing can be built in the future without us," insisted the president of the Les Transformateurs party.
Mr. Masra, a 42-year-old economist and popular opposition figure, was forced into exile in Cameroon in late 2022 after a violently suppressed protest in which many people were killed by law enforcement, without any official death toll ever being released.
He returned to Chad a year later under an agreement reached with the Chadian government in Kinshasa. He was appointed Prime Minister shortly afterwards, five months before the May 2024 presidential election in which he came second with nearly 20% of the vote.
Mr. Déby had garnered approximately 60% of the votes, winning an election that was contested and boycotted by a large part of the opposition.
Although Succès Masra, along with eight other opponents, was able to regain his freedom following the presidential pardon, his conviction remains: he retains his criminal record as well as the civil and financial penalties, which makes him ineligible.
Chad, a Central African country with nearly 20 million inhabitants, has been led since 2021 by Mr. Déby, who took the helm of a military transition after the death of his father Idriss Déby Itno, killed by rebels after 30 years at the head of the country.
In October 2025, a constitutional revision adopted with a large majority in Parliament established a seven-year presidential term renewable without limit.
