Zimbabwe : la belle-fille du président accusée de trafic de drogue et de blanchiment d’argent
Kelsea Tafirenyika, the stepdaughter of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, faces serious criminal charges.
Arrest, seizure of illicit substances and suspicions of money laundering: a look back at a case that has caused a great stir.
It was an intervention by investigators from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit that sparked the investigation. During a raid on the 22-year-old woman's home, located in the upscale Greystone Park neighborhood of Harare, law enforcement discovered a veritable arsenal of controlled and illegal substances.
According to the evidence presented by the public prosecutor's office, the search led to the interception of:
More than 200 vials of pethidine and morphine were hidden in his bedroom.
Five rolls of cannabis were hidden in his luxury vehicle, a Lamborghini.
Unregistered medicines whose possession and resale are strictly regulated by law.
In addition to the possession and attempted distribution of narcotics and pharmaceuticals, the case quickly took a major financial turn. Kelsea Tafirenyika is also being prosecuted for forgery and money laundering involving a colossal sum estimated at US$9.36 million.
Investigators are questioning the origin of real estate and financial assets valued at several million dollars attributed to the young woman.
Before the judges of the Harare Magistrates' Court, the defendant firmly denied all the accusations. Regarding the funds and real estate suspected of stemming from criminal activities, the defense maintained that they were simply "legitimate gifts from her husband."
Kelsea Tafirenyika and his lawyers also accuse the police of politicizing the case and conducting a smear campaign aimed at "scandalizing and smearing the First Family of Zimbabwe".
Despite the strong opposition expressed by the prosecution — which highlighted the risks of flight and the continuation of investigations to identify possible suppliers — the court granted Kelsea Tafirenyika bail set at US$1,000.
However, it remains subject to strict conditions: regular reporting to the police station, prohibition of contacting witnesses and obligation to be available to the justice system for the entire duration of the investigation.
The outcome of the upcoming hearings will determine whether these accusations will hold up against the aggressive defense strategy adopted by the presidential daughter-in-law.
