The Abéné forest is coming back to life. This Saturday, August 29, 2026, a large-scale reforestation operation was carried out by the Diouloulou Water and Forestry Department in partnership with the G-Sand company, on a new one-hectare plot. This initiative is part of a protocol for restoring exploited areas, aiming to restore the forest's ecological vitality and its protective role.

Lieutenant Samba Kamara, head of the water and forestry sub-sector, specified that 920 plants were introduced this year, including Deterium senegalensis, Saba senegalensis, various palm trees, Anacardium occidentale, and Chaya senegalensis. "Monitoring is essential. We will return regularly, every two weeks or every month, to ensure the survival of the plants," he stated.

The first plot, replanted last year with 850 plants, already testifies to the success of this approach, despite some losses compensated by replanting.

For Mamadou Sankou Diabang, representative of G-Sand, this action reflects the company's commitment to the local population. "The rehabilitation of the dîne (a type of irrigation system) is part of our responsibilities. The state's technical services determine the suitable species. Last year, we saw that the choice was judicious, and this year again, we will ensure the monitoring of the plants."

The former agricultural land is now being transformed into a living space. Grass is growing back, trees are taking root, and nature is reclaiming its territory. Those involved promise to continue these efforts to make the land "even more beautiful" and return a preserved ecological heritage to the residents.

This reforestation in Abéné illustrates a dynamic of environmental restoration where the State and the private sector combine their forces for a sustainable future and a greener Casamance.
