Campagne agricole 2026-2027 : la pluviométrie reste déficitaire à Kédougou, mais les cultures évoluent favorablement.
The 2026-2027 agricultural season is continuing under generally favorable conditions in the Kédougou region, despite a rainfall deficit compared to the previous season. This is according to Weekly Agricultural Season Monitoring Report No. 12, covering the period from August 20 to 26, 2026.
As of August 26, rainfall records indicate an overall situation lower than that recorded last year, ranging from below average to normal compared to the seasonal reference average (1991-2020). However, some surpluses have been observed in certain localities.
Significant deficits in several areas
Comparison with the previous campaign reveals lower rainfall totals in 13 of the 15 stations monitored in the region.
The largest differences were recorded in Fongolimbi (-401 mm), Laminya (-285.2 mm), Bembou (-283 mm), Kédougou Agri (-259.6 mm), Missirah Sirimana (-242 mm) and Saraya (-241 mm).
Conversely, two stations recorded higher total rainfall than last year: Salémata (+108.5 mm) and Dakately (+48.2 mm). As of August 26th, these two areas were experiencing more favorable rainfall conditions than during the previous season.
The crops continue their development
Despite this contrasting rainfall situation, observations made on the ground show a good dynamic in the agricultural campaign.
The first waves of maize and peanut planting have already reached the generative stages, indicating advanced crop development. The remaining planting waves, as well as the plots of fonio, rice, sorghum, and cotton, are primarily in the growth and vegetative development phases.
The producers are also continuing to maintain the plots. Manual and mechanical weeding, spreading of fertilizers and herbicide treatments are regularly carried out in order to keep the crops in good condition.
The fall armyworm under surveillance
From a phytosanitary point of view, the main threat remains the presence of the fall armyworm (FAW) on maize crops.
Attacks have been reported in the departments of Kédougou, Salémata and Saraya. However, the damage remains moderate and under control for the time being, thanks to monitoring carried out in the field and phytosanitary interventions.
At the end of the period from August 20 to 26, the agricultural services presented a generally reassuring assessment. Despite rainfall levels lower than last year in most areas, crop development remains strong, with crops continuing their normal growth and producers receiving regular technical support.
Vigilance remains essential, particularly regarding rainfall patterns and the potential progression of fall armyworm attacks in the coming weeks.
