The 2026-2027 agricultural season in the Kédougou region is unfolding under the threat of a persistent rainfall deficit. According to weekly report no. 18 on crop monitoring, as of October 7, 2026, 12 of the 15 monitored rain gauge stations show rainfall totals lower than last year's. Despite this unfavorable water situation, overall crop development remains satisfactory, although the presence of the fall armyworm calls for increased vigilance.
Rainfall is causing problems in several areas of the Kédougou region. Just a few weeks before the end of the rainy season, data from the weekly report No. 18 monitoring the 2026-2027 agricultural campaign reveals an overall deficit compared to the same period in 2025 and the 1991-2020 seasonal reference average.
Of the 15 rainfall stations monitored, 12 recorded totals lower than those of the previous year. The most significant deficits were recorded in Saraya, with a difference of 334.5 mm, in Bembou (-317 mm), in Missirah Sirimana (-267.5 mm), in Khossanto (-265.8 mm), in Laminya (-257.9 mm) and in Fongolimbi (-240.4 mm).
Conversely, three localities show a favorable trend compared to 2025. These are Ethiolo, which records a surplus of 348 mm, Dakatély (+272.9 mm) and Salémata (+233 mm).
Persistent deficits compared to the seasonal norm
Comparison with the 1991-2020 rainfall average confirms this contrasting trend. Only four stations show above-average rainfall: Ethiolo (+308.7 mm), Salémata (+261.7 mm), Saraya (+53.5 mm) and Dakatély (+10 mm).
In other areas, rainfall remains below seasonal averages, with variations ranging from -16.3 mm in Bembou to -361.4 mm in Oubadji. This uneven distribution of rainfall underscores the need for careful management of the agricultural season, particularly in areas most vulnerable to water scarcity.
Cultures that are evolving in encouraging ways
Despite this unfavorable rainfall context, field observations indicate an overall satisfactory development of crops in the region.
The first waves of fonio, maize, and peanut planting have reached advanced stages, from grain filling to maturity and harvest. This progress reflects a still encouraging agricultural dynamic.
The other sowing waves, as well as the rice, sorghum, and cotton crops, are continuing their development. Depending on the crop and sowing dates, they are currently in the vegetative growth, stem elongation, and flowering stages. However, these prospects remain dependent on water availability and the evolution of the phytosanitary situation in the coming weeks.
The fall armyworm under surveillance
From a phytosanitary perspective, the presence of the fall armyworm (FAW) has been reported on maize crops. The report indicates its presence in the departments of Kédougou, Salémata, and Saraya.
The observed damage is considered moderate, and the situation is deemed to be under control thanks to the rigorous monitoring implemented by the technical services. Nevertheless, its presence remains a point of concern for producers, given the risks this pest poses to crops.
Overall, the 2026-2027 agricultural season presents a mixed picture in the Kédougou region: rainfall deficits in most areas, but crop development remains promising. Maintaining this momentum will depend in particular on the ability of producers to cope with water constraints and prevent a potential worsening of pest infestations.
