Reducing massive imports and securing the supply of local poultry producers in order to strengthen national poultry sovereignty: this is the objective aimed at through the inauguration, this Friday, August 7, 2026, of a hatching egg production unit in Taïba-Ndiaye by the Minister Delegate in charge of Livestock, Maître Ousmane Diagne.

The project has set itself two objectives: the modernization of the poultry value chain and the control of production costs for farmers in the Thiès region and the rest of the country.

The factory, costing a total of 969 million FCFA, was built with the support of Avvite-X (a private company), the National Bank for Economic Development (BNDE), and the Livestock Farming Fund (FONSTAB) of the Ministry of Livestock. It is the result of an initiative aimed at strengthening the country's food sovereignty and modernizing the sector.

"It will contribute to reducing the country's heavy dependence on imports of hatching eggs and day-old chicks, 86% of which currently come from abroad," said Mr. Ousmane Diagne.

To begin operations, the factory will have 6,000 females and 850 males at its disposal to ensure an annual production of 3.15 million eggs. The first batch of breeding stock will arrive in Taïba-Ndiaye next Thursday.

According to Fatou Diouf, director of FONSTAB, this new factory will reduce imports of animal products, create jobs, and strengthen the entire Senegalese livestock sector. She believes that the public-private partnership behind this investment (government, BNDE, and private sector) is poised to rapidly modernize livestock farming.

The improvement of working conditions for poultry farmers, the need for the State to provide more support to local poultry farming, the strengthening of technical and regulatory frameworks, and the guarantee of the sustainability of investments were, among other things, at the center of the discussions.

Minister Ousmane Diagne finally invited banking institutions and entrepreneurs to invest more in poultry farming, while assuring that the State will continue to facilitate access to financing and enforce technical and sanitary standards.
