Niayes et Thiès : Des variétés françaises de pomme de terre à l'essai pour améliorer le stockage au Sénégal
The French potato seed industry wants to strengthen its cooperation with Senegal. France Plants, Semae and several French companies met this Wednesday, September 23, in Dakar, at a multi-stakeholder workshop organized at Eurocham.
The stated objective is to go beyond simply selling plants to work on the entire value chain, from production to consumption, including processing and storage: "We are already present in Senegal, but we really want to establish French plants and French varieties in the Senegalese landscape," explained Bernard Quéré, director of France Plants.
The French delegation wishes to introduce new varieties and verify their adaptation to local climatic conditions. Some could meet the specific needs of frying, stews or even industrial processing: "We really need to be able to test them here, in your climatic conditions, and see if they really correspond to your uses," explained Yann Kerven, representative of Elorn Plants.
Trials could be conducted in collaboration with the Senegalese Institute for Agricultural Research (ISRA), the Center for Horticultural Development (CDH), and private partners. These trials will allow for the evaluation of variety performance, as well as their suitability to the expectations of producers and consumers.
The approach does not aim to systematically replace varieties already cultivated in Senegal, but is based on experimentation and adaptation to the realities of different production areas.
Another major issue raised during the discussions was crop preservation. French professionals offer technical support to optimize production and storage conditions. According to Bernard Quéré, good preservation begins in the field, as potatoes must be grown and harvested under conditions strictly adapted for storage.
Cold storage solutions, including solar-powered systems, could also be explored with French companies. Certain varieties with better natural preservation capabilities will also be tested.
The mission continues this Thursday, September 24, in the Niayes region and in Thiès. The delegation is scheduled to visit farms and storage facilities, as well as meet directly with producers and cooperatives. Through this initiative, France Plants aims to build long-term partnerships with Senegalese stakeholders to support the sustainable development of the sector.
