«Déclenchement du processus électoral territorial» : Pastef saisit la Cena et le ministère de l’intérieur
In Senegal, the date for the next local elections has still not been set, despite numerous appeals from opposition parties. On Wednesday, Pastef announced that it had sent "a formal request to trigger the territorial electoral process" to the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, with copies sent to the President of the Republic and the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA).
In a press release, the party's Political Bureau explains that the departmental and municipal councilors were elected on January 23, 2022, for a five-year term. It cites Articles L.236 and L.269 of the Electoral Code, which stipulate that their renewal must take place within thirty days preceding the expiration of these terms. Furthermore, Article L.63 of the same code "requires," according to the Pastef Political Bureau, that the election be held on a Sunday. Therefore, for them, "the last legally possible date is Sunday, January 17, 2027."
Today, Pastef laments the fact that the decree setting the date for the territorial elections, which triggers the implementation of electoral operations, has not yet been issued. "Similarly, according to Articles L.247 and L.282 of the Electoral Code, the amount of the deposit, which must be set by order of the Minister in charge of elections, after consultation with stakeholders, no later than one hundred and fifty (150) days before the date of the vote, has not been published. This legal deadline has now passed, and each additional day of inaction exacerbates the violation of the aforementioned legal provisions," Pastef denounces.
The political party led by Ousmane Sonko therefore believes that "the President's inaction cannot create the conditions for a de facto postponement of the territorial elections." For him, organizing these elections within the timeframe stipulated by law is neither a matter of political choice nor discretionary power: "the electoral calendar is binding on everyone, including the President of the Republic," he clarifies.
Pastef therefore declares that the territorial elections must be held within the timeframe stipulated by law. It promises to use all republican and legal avenues to ensure that the law is respected and that the people can freely exercise their sovereignty.
