Dékheulé : Le mausolée de Lat Dior délaissé à tort, le sabre introuvable, le musée non valorisé
To protest against the "overwhelming neglect of the mausoleum" of the national hero, Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, the Damel of Cayor, and the "forgotten promises", Dékheulé (place of his death), a land steeped in history, straddling the communes of Darou Marnane and Thilmakha, did not hesitate to raise its voice to challenge the State.
The occasion of the celebration of the anniversary of the hero's disappearance was an opportunity for the descendants of the royal family to make strong demands regarding the rehabilitation of Lat Dior's mausoleum, the enhancement of the museum and the improvement of access to historical sites.
They recalled the "forgotten" promises of the State, pleaded for tourist development of the site and asked that the search continue to find the trace of the national hero's sword.
According to a descendant of the Diop family, "the family had given the sword to a former President, who entrusted it to the army for safekeeping. But an inquiry with the general staff failed to locate it. The family would like to continue the search."
She expects concrete actions to preserve the memory of the Damel and keep this heritage alive. The family indicates that the restoration of the mausoleum is their top priority. "The goal is to make it a major site of remembrance, reflection, and transmission," they say.
She also called for the construction of a historical museum dedicated to the life and struggle of Lat Dior, where artifacts from his life would be preserved. She believes the national hero deserves more than what is currently being done for him.
The requests also concern the development and strengthening of road and cultural infrastructure serving the sites. The family cites visitors, researchers, students, and tourists among the target audiences. The museum has been criticized for its current form, its perceived insufficient visitor numbers, and the lack of a development strategy.
