Festival of Cultures in Gabon: Senegal, guest of honor, aims to fill Libreville with the rhythm of its culture

As the guest of honor at the 15th edition of the Festival of Cultures, which will take place from August 21 to 23, 2026, Senegal intends to use these three days to showcase the richness of its heritage. The program includes traditions, gastronomy, music, dance, and wrestling, with the aim of creating a true cultural bridge between Dakar and Libreville.

The land of Teranga arrives in Libreville with a program that promises to be as rich as it is diverse. On Avenue Jean-Paul II, the public will be able to discover traditional songs and dances, costumes, culinary specialties, and also Senegalese wrestling, an emblematic discipline of the country.

This participation is primarily seen as a response to the honor bestowed upon Senegal. The Senegalese ambassador to Gabon expressed his gratitude to the Gabonese authorities and conveyed the greetings of the Senegalese Minister of Culture, Crafts and Tourism, who was unable to attend.

For the diplomat, the choice of Senegal also reflects the close relationship between the two countries. He sees it as a testament to "the exceptional quality of the relations of friendship and fraternity" that unite Libreville and Dakar. The event thus provides an additional platform to strengthen these ties through cultural exchanges.

Preserving cultural memory

Beyond the festivities, this edition also carries an important message of transmission. Faced with social transformations, the influence of new technologies, and globalization, the ambassador warns against the risk of seeing African societies gradually drift away from their cultural heritage.

He specifically mentions the danger of "acculturation" and "depersonalization", believing that the preservation of heritage necessarily involves its transmission to new generations.

In this vision, culture is not limited to the preservation of traditions. It becomes a tool for dialogue and rapprochement between peoples. This is a legacy that Senegal associates in particular with the thought of Léopold Sédar Senghor, a major figure of Negritude and advocate of the "civilization of the universal."

For three days, Libreville will be a showcase of Senegalese culture. For the public, the aim will be as much to discover artistic and culinary expressions as to understand how these traditions continue to live on, be passed down, and bring communities closer together.
