Madd de Casamance : un fruit sénégalais désormais protégé mondialement
Senegal has just made history in promoting its local products. The "Madd" of Casamance, a wild fruit with a tangy taste and nutritional benefits, has received international recognition at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. Now listed as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) within the world heritage, it has become a symbol of food and cultural sovereignty for the entire country.

On Thursday, August 20, WIPO presented Senegal with the international registration certificate for "Madd," alongside Penja pepper from Cameroon. These two products are the very first Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) from the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) area registered under the Lisbon System.
This recognition is the culmination of nearly twenty years of mobilization. From the Ouagadougou Declaration in 2005 to the Abidjan Ministerial Conference in 2022, OAPI has been a strong advocate for African producers. Accession, in December 2022, to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement paved the way for this historic double first, marking a decisive step forward for the recognition of the continent's products.
The "Madd," an emblematic fruit of the Casamance region, is much more than just food: it embodies a cultural identity and ancestral know-how. Used in juices, jams, and local recipes, it is also a vehicle for collective memory. Its international protection now guarantees local producers global recognition, protection against counterfeiting, and access to new markets.
Beyond national pride, this recognition highlights Africa's agri-food potential. It encourages producers to take advantage of these protection tools to promote their products and strengthen the competitiveness of African regions on the world stage.

With this recognition, the "Madd" of Casamance becomes an ambassador for Senegal and Africa. It illustrates that local resources, long marginalized, can compete with the world's greatest agri-food heritages. Senegalese producers now have a powerful tool to conquer international markets while preserving the authenticity of their terroir. The Madd, a fruit of Casamance, is now a symbol of sovereignty, pride, and the future.
