Saint-Louis : Guet Ndar renoue avec l’ambiance des régates traditionnelles
The tradition of regattas has regained all its fervor in Guet Ndar. This Friday, August 15, 2026, the fishermen and the people of this emblematic district of Saint-Louis gathered for major pirogue races, in a festive and popular atmosphere.
Three races were on the program. The Lodo sub-district particularly distinguished itself by winning the first two heats. Driven by good coordination, great determination and the encouragement of their supporters, its rowers quickly took control of the competition.
The third race, however, allowed Pond Khole to respond. The rowers from this sub-district emerged victorious after a thrilling contest, providing a spectacle enjoyed by the public. Dack also participated in the various races, contributing to the lively atmosphere and success of this day dedicated to both competition and camaraderie.
The event took place in the presence of the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Dièye, who was on a working visit to Saint-Louis. She shared this moment of unity with fishing industry stakeholders and the people of Guet Ndar, alongside the administrative, territorial and traditional authorities of the Langue de Barbarie.
Beyond the sporting aspect, these regattas represent an important moment of reunion for the Guet Ndar community. They allow for the perpetuation of a cultural and maritime heritage deeply rooted in the history of Saint-Louis, while strengthening the ties between the different sub-districts.
This momentum is expected to continue in the coming weeks. A major new competition has been announced for October 2nd, organized by the Entente Réveil Guet Ndar Mool. This event should once again bring together the various neighborhoods around canoeing, competition, and camaraderie.
In Guet Ndar, the rivalry remains sporting and good-natured. After Lodo's two victories and Pond Khole's comeback, all eyes are now on the next match, with the ambition of further developing this tradition which remains one of the strong markers of the identity of the fishing community of Saint-Louis.
