Retrait de Macky Sall au poste de SG de l’ONU : Seydi Gassama parle d’un « échec cuisant »
The executive director of Amnesty International Senegal, Seydi Gassama, reacted to the withdrawal of Macky Sall's candidacy for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations, announced this Saturday, October 17, 2026. He affirms that the former head of state "knew from the beginning" that he would not have the support of the African Union.
According to him, the regional organization remains committed to the unwritten, but widely accepted, principle of regional rotation, which allowed it to occupy the post twice with Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Kofi Annan.
The human rights advocate also argues that Macky Sall's record on human rights, democratic governance, and financial governance constituted "a serious handicap." "He also knew that his catastrophic record on human rights, good democratic governance, and financial governance was a serious handicap. But he thought that with money and influence—for once he couldn't use the justice system to eliminate other candidates—he could overcome these handicaps," he explains.

"The withdrawal of his candidacy, if it is proven, would be a resounding defeat for Macky Sall himself and for all the states that supported him despite common sense and the objective elements of assessment at their disposal," he says.
Seydi Gassama also commends the efforts of the victims of the former regime and their supporters to publicize the record of the former Head of State. "These efforts have mattered, and Macky Sall and the states that supported him know it," he affirms.
He argues that this failure constitutes "a strong signal sent to all Heads of State on the continent": they cannot, in his view, "persecute their opponents, flout human rights and the principles of good governance" and hope to play an important international role after leaving the presidency.
In a statement published today on his social media platforms, Macky Sall announced he was withdrawing his candidacy following the informal vote of October 16, after consultations with Presidents Évariste Ndayishimiye and Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye. He mentioned test votes in favor of a candidate from Latin America and the Caribbean, possibly a woman.

Macky Sall ne doit pas pouvoir s'en sortir aussi facilement, simplement en blanchissant ses crimes par des milliards qu'il a volé au Sénégal.
