Senegal-Germany: New prospects for bilateral partnership

Senegal and Germany intend to strengthen their cooperation in the economic, energy, health, security, and cultural fields. This commitment was expressed last Tuesday at the German Ambassador's Residence in Senegal, during the celebration of German Unity Day, in the presence of the Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, Samba Diouf.

German Unity Day was celebrated last Tuesday at the Residence of the German Ambassador in Dakar Plateau. Representing the government at the ceremony, the Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Affairs spoke about relations between the two countries.

On the economic front, Samba Diouf presented Germany as a partner of choice to support the transformation of the Senegalese economy thanks to its industrial and technological expertise and its capacity for innovation.

"Our ambition is to promote investments that create skilled jobs for our youth, to stimulate the local transformation of our natural resources and to foster greater integration of Senegalese companies into regional and global value chains," he said.

In this perspective, he said, Senegal also intends to strengthen its cooperation with Berlin in the field of energy transition, through the development of renewable energies, the improvement of energy efficiency, the mobilization of appropriate financing and the transfer of skills.

Health and safety are at the heart of our priorities

Strengthening national pharmaceutical and vaccine production capacities is also among the areas of cooperation cited by the minister. Research, medical innovation, and local production are all avenues likely to contribute to building a more resilient healthcare system.

On the security front, Samba Diouf stressed the importance of cooperation between the defense and security forces of the two countries, in a regional context marked by transnational threats and complex security challenges.

He did, however, point out that lasting stability cannot rely solely on security responses. It also requires continued investment in education, training, and social inclusion.

University exchanges, vocational training, research and culture are also essential levers for strengthening ties between the Senegalese and German people.

Berlin is betting on businesses and investments

Speaking at the event, the German ambassador to Senegal, Kai Baldow, highlighted the German-Senegalese economic program, which aims in particular to support German companies wishing to establish themselves in Senegal and to encourage economic initiatives between the two countries.

According to him, this instrument, part of a European initiative, helps to connect businesses, cultural players and artists in order to promote exchanges and create pathways conducive to investment.

The diplomat also stressed the need to establish a transparent and reliable environment to allow businesses to grow. In this regard, he welcomed the reforms undertaken by the Senegalese government, particularly within the framework of renewed cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Kai Baldow also stressed that the strength of the bilateral partnership is based on several decades of technical and financial cooperation, notably through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German development bank KfW.

“I am convinced that we have much to learn from each other. What we need are ideas and experiences from both our continents,” he stated.

The ambassador mentioned the participation of fifty young German athletes in preparation for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), presented as one of the largest participating teams.

German reunification is celebrated every October 3rd.
