Vallée du fleuve : le riz importé tue le riz local, l’État se tire une balle dans le pied
According to L'Observateur, rice producers in the Senegal River Valley are experiencing an unprecedented crisis, marked by a significant drop in sales of locally grown rice and difficulties in financing paddy processing. The newspaper reports that more than 35,000 tons of milled rice are currently stored in warehouses, in addition to 37,000 tons of paddy rice still held by producers, while the current harvest is expected to yield nearly 290,000 additional tons from some 49,000 hectares under cultivation.
According to industry professionals interviewed by the newspaper of the Future Media Group, this paralysis is due to the overabundance of imported rice on the market and the failure of government support measures. Marie Rassoul Niang, Secretary General of the National Rice Growers Association, revealed in the newspaper that "only 1,213 tons have been removed under the system established with importers."
Furthermore, the state has still not paid the promised subsidies to importers to facilitate the purchase of locally grown rice. The newspaper also highlights the government's failure to honor its promises regarding institutional purchases of locally grown rice by public administrations (schools, hospitals, the military, universities).
This crisis threatens the entire economic fabric of the region. Faced with a lack of visibility on sales, business leaders like Assane Koffi, CEO of SSFIA, are already considering staff reductions. Given the urgency of the situation, rice farmers, through their spokesperson Ms. Niang, are calling on the government to "transfer the subsidies intended for importers to rice mills in order to resolve the situation" and are demanding the effective implementation of public purchasing quotas to save the sector and preserve jobs.
