Senelec : La puissance installée franchit le cap des 2 300 MW sous l'œil du ministre de l'Énergie
For his first visit to Senelec's National Dispatching Center in Fass Mbao on Monday, July 6, 2026, the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Abdourahmane Diouf, delved into the heart of the Senegalese electricity system. Alongside Senelec's Director General, Pape Toby Gaye, he toured this strategic infrastructure which manages, in real time, the production, transmission, and exchange of electricity nationwide.
In the various operational rooms of the center, the technical teams presented to the minister the missions of this infrastructure considered to be the brain of the national electrical network.
The Dispatching department constantly ensures the balance between electricity production and consumption. It also oversees flows on the transmission network, ensures the stability of the electricity supply, and controls energy imports and exports, as well as gas purchases for production.
Electricity production has more than doubled in ten years
This immersion also allowed Abdourahmane Diouf to learn about the performance recorded by the energy sector over the last decade.
Annual electricity production has increased from 3,438 GWh in 2015 to 7,964 GWh in 2025, representing a growth of over 130% in ten years. During the same period, installed capacity increased from 893 MW to 2,311 MW. Renewable energies now account for 19% of the national electricity mix.
Senelec officials also highlighted the significant role of independent power producers (IPPs) in the current system. They now account for 79% of installed capacity, while a large portion of the energy consumed comes from purchases made from these operators as well as from regional imports.
These actors include Karpowership, West African Energy, Malicounda Power, Sendou, the Taïba Ndiaye wind farm and several solar power plants.
Storage, network and regional market: the next challenges
Beyond the recorded performance, the visit helped identify the challenges ahead for the sector. These include better integrating renewable energies, developing storage capacities with the BESS projects in Kounoune and Ndindy, strengthening the transmission network, and securing high-voltage lines.
Senelec is also preparing for Senegal's entry into the ECOWAS regional electricity market, a project that requires continuous adaptation of infrastructure.
Through this first immersion in the national Dispatching, Abdourahmane Diouf was able to measure the strategic role of this platform in the continuity of the electricity service and the challenges linked to the evolution of the Senegalese energy model.
