Casamance : le ronier, un arbre aux multiples usages au cœur de la vie quotidienne
In Casamance, palm groves stretch as far as the eye can see in many localities and constitute an essential resource for the population. Beyond its fruit, highly valued for its nutritional qualities, the palm tree plays a role in several aspects of daily life. In Tendouck, the notable Ousmane Diatta emphasizes that "the palm tree is useful in more ways than one." According to him, its fruit contributes to the families' diet, while its trunk serves as a framework in the construction of houses, and its branches can be used to make beds, chairs, and armchairs. He specifies that it is primarily the poorest families who use the leaves to roof their houses. "This roof," he adds, "needs to be replaced every two years, but it keeps the house cool and doesn't produce the noise of zinc roofs when it rains." He regrets, however, that zinc sheets are gradually replacing this traditional roofing, which is very popular with the elderly.
For his part, Ibrahima Diedhiou, a resident of Tendouck, points out the artisanal importance of ronier palm leaves, used in basket making, while the branches are also used to build fences to protect agricultural and market garden areas. Finally, the nuts that fall to the ground ensure the natural regeneration of the ronier palm groves, making the ronier palm a precious heritage that must be preserved.
